How to Choose a Dentist in Midtown Sacramento

By Dr. Aashima S. Vaid, DDS, FAGDJuly 21, 20267 min read

The short answer

When choosing a dentist, look for verifiable credentials such as Academy of General Dentistry Fellowship or Mastership, a practice that provides written treatment estimates before work begins, continuity of care with the same dentist each visit, and a clear explanation of alternatives for every recommended treatment.

Choosing a dentist is an oddly high-stakes decision made with very little information. Star ratings capture the front desk and the wait time more than the dentistry. Here is what we would look at if we were choosing for a family member.

1. Credentials that require ongoing work

Every licensed dentist met a standard. What distinguishes practices is what happens afterward. Academy of General Dentistry Fellowship (FAGD) requires hundreds of hours of continuing education and a comprehensive examination; Mastership (MAGD) requires more than 1,100 hours, most of it hands-on. Fewer than a small percentage of general dentists in the country hold Mastership. Dr. Chirag R. Vaid holds MAGD; Dr. Aashima S. Vaid holds FAGD. Both are University of the Pacific graduates.

2. Scope of care under one roof

Being referred out for every procedure means repeated new-patient paperwork, duplicate imaging and a longer overall timeline. Ask what a practice handles in-house. Ours covers preventive and restorative care, cosmetic dentistry, implant placement and restoration, Invisalign and sedation options — so most treatment plans stay with one team.

3. Transparency about money

You should receive a written estimate before treatment begins, with an insurance portion and a patient portion clearly separated. You should also be told what happens if something changes mid-treatment. Ambiguity here is the single most common source of bad dental experiences, and it is entirely avoidable.

4. A real answer to "what are my options?"

Almost every dental problem has more than one reasonable solution, including — sometimes — watchful waiting. A dentist who presents one plan with no alternatives and no explanation of the trade-offs is not giving you enough to consent with. Ask what happens if you do nothing for six months. The quality of that answer tells you a great deal.

5. Continuity

Seeing the same dentist and the same hygienist over years means someone notices that a spot has changed slightly since last time. In a small two-doctor practice like ours, that continuity is built in rather than something you have to request.

For patients without insurance

Ask whether the practice offers a membership plan. Our Vaid Savings Plan covers cleanings, exams and x-rays for a flat annual or monthly fee and includes a discount on additional treatment — with no deductibles, no waiting periods, no annual maximum and no claim forms.

6. The practical details

  • Location and parking — ours is at 2201 Capitol Avenue in Midtown, with an early Friday morning schedule for patients who cannot miss work.
  • How urgent problems are handled and how quickly you can be seen.
  • Whether the office communicates the way you prefer, by phone, email or text.
  • Whether the team makes you comfortable asking a basic question twice.

If you are evaluating practices in Midtown, East Sacramento or downtown, we are happy to answer these questions on the phone before you book anything.

Frequently asked questions

What does MAGD after a dentist's name mean?
MAGD stands for Master of the Academy of General Dentistry. It requires more than 1,100 hours of continuing education, including at least 400 hands-on hours, and is held by a small minority of general dentists.
Should I choose a dentist based on my insurance network?
Network status matters for cost, but it is one factor among several. Ask any out-of-network practice for a written estimate of your portion — the difference is often smaller than expected, particularly for preventive care.
What should I bring to a first dental appointment?
Photo ID, your insurance card if you have one, a list of current medications, and any recent x-rays from a previous dentist. Arriving ten minutes early to complete paperwork keeps your exam time intact.
